ENGAGED/ADJACENT Glossary

For the purpose of positioning, targeting, and determining ranges, characters within a given Zone have their positions further qualified by who they are Adjacent to or Engaged with. Because combat is fluid, their exact position within a Zone is largely irrelevant, but the fact they are grouped closely together matters.

It costs 1 Move to Engage an enemy in your Zone in melee. It also costs 1 Move to leave a melee and Disengage.

While Engaged with an enemy, you are eligible to use attacks with a range of touch. You may also use longer-ranged attacks with foes you are Engaged in melee with.

All characters Engaged in a melee targeted by an attack with a Narrow area of effect are at risk of being hit.

It is difficult to use a Close Range or Long Range attack to target a foe outside of the melee you are Engaged in. Firing out of melee imposes 1 Penalty on the Attack.

It is similarly difficult to successfully target a foe Engaged in another melee with a Close Range or Long Range attack. The swirling chaos makes aiming a challenge. Firing into melee imposes 1 Penalty on the Attack.

A character who is Adjacent to an ally is identical to being Engaged, for the purpose of the rules.
